Meta-Analysis Reveals Positive Effects of Real-Time Ultrasound Imaging
Study uncovers the efficiency benefits of intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) during cardiac ablation in treatment of arrhythmias.

The meta-analysis demonstrated that innovative ultrasound technology can improve patient treatment for those with irregular heartbeats, more specifically patients with cardiac arrythmia.

In collaboration with researchers at the Tokyo Medical and Dental University and CTI Clinical Trial Consulting, Biosense Webster, Inc., part of the Johnson & Johnson Medical Devices Companies published the findings in the Journal of Cardiovascular Electrophysiology.

A total of 19 studies including 2,186 subjects were included in the meta-analysis. The results displayed that the use of ICE during catheter ablation procedures led to lower fluoroscopy time, lower fluoroscopy dose, and reduced procedure time. This was compared to standard imaging and mapping techniques that did not employ ICE.

Fluoroscopy time was reduced by up to 7 minutes, while procedure time was reduced by about 15 minutes. The impact was even more significant when physicians used ICE catheters compatible with 3D mapping systems.

Many physicians rely on fluoroscopy for visualisation during the procedure, requiring the use of lead to protect themselves. The reduction in fluoroscopy time would prove to be beneficial in avoiding high levels of radiation exposure during cardiac ablation.

Dr Masahiko Goya of the Tokyo Medical and Dental University and the primary author of the study shared how the research was essential in driving improvements in conducting cardiac ablation.

“Fluoroscopy reduction is important not only for patient safety by eliminating potentially hazardous exposure to radiation, but also for the safety of healthcare workers who are operating in the electrophysiology lab daily. We are pleased with the results showing improved efficiency, without compromising on safety and effectiveness.”

This is the first meta-analysis to consolidate the results of several comparative studies investigating ICE. Up till now, there hasn’t been any macro perspective on how ICE-guidance, or real-time ultrasound imaging contributes to efficient cardia ablation procedure.
